There's no wrong answer here. All three get a young child moving, listening and building confidence. The best fit depends on what your child already loves to do, so start there.
At 5, most kids are ready for their first structured activity, and the choices can feel endless. Gymnastics, dance and ninja are three of the most popular, and they overlap more than you'd think. Here's how they differ, and how to tell which one will light your child up.
The quick comparison
| Gymnastics | Ninja | Dance | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it builds most | Body control, strength, flexibility, balance | Grip and upper-body strength, agility, problem-solving | Rhythm, musicality, expression, coordination to music |
| What a class feels like | Coached skills on mats, beam, bars and trampoline, with clear levels to climb | A coached obstacle course: climb, swing, vault, figure out the route | Learning steps and combinations, often building toward a recital |
| Kids who tend to love it | Cartwheels across the living room, hanging off everything, upside down any chance they get | Climbs every tree and couch, races friends, loves a challenge | Dances whenever music plays, loves costumes and performing |
| At Precision | Kinder Stars, 50 minutes, co-ed, age 5 | Preschool Urban Ninja, 1 hour, ages 4–5 | We don't teach dance. Our tumbling classes are popular with dancers later on |
Questions that usually settle it
What does your child do when nobody's directing them? A child who climbs is telling you something; so is one who spins to every song. Follow the instinct they already have.
Do they like a clear goal, or a puzzle? Gymnastics gives kids a ladder of skills to earn. Ninja hands them a course and asks them to solve it, which suits kids who like to figure things out their own way.
How do they feel about an audience? Dance often builds toward performing on stage, which some kids adore and others dread. Gymnastics and ninja at this age are about the class itself, with no recital to prepare for.
Boy or girl, it doesn't matter. Kinder Stars is co-ed, and so is Urban Ninja.
They feed each other
These aren't either/or forever. Gymnastics gives dancers flexibility, strength and the confidence to turn and leap. Ninja kids pick up gymnastics movements as part of training. And gymnasts carry their rhythm and body control into anything else they try. Plenty of families start with one and add another later.
Still not sure? Try it
The fastest way to know is to watch your child do it. Your first class at Precision is free, in either Kinder Stars or Preschool Urban Ninja. You'll usually know by the end of the class. If you're deciding on age as well as activity, read What age should my child start gymnastics?
